Local Teacher Cookie Step Receives 2008 NEA Educator of the Year Award On Saturday, April 5th, VUHS history teacher Cookie Steponaitis was awarded the 2008 NEA Educator of the Year Award. The Award is based on the criteria of fostering a love of history, historical research, and encouragement for participation in the Vermont and National History Day competition. " Mrs.Step", as she is known at VUHS, has been involved with historical research and performance based assessments for over 20 years. Her students in the classroom and in the Otter Creek Basin Student History Club research and produce videos, books, performances and special projects all year long. Working with the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, International Lions Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and other civic organizations, the students have competed in ten different history, research and speech competitions this year, involving a total of 100 different students. [ more ] MVAA Members Honored By Mike Cameron LtoR David Fuller Advanced Life Support Provider of the Year, Judy Holmes Basic Life Support Provider of the Year, and Paula Mayer EMS System Improvement Award were recognized by the State of Vermont on March 29th 200 for their excellent service. Vermont grants 8 awards at its EMS Conference in Burlington every year. We are proud to publish the three award winners on their outstanding achievement. This is the 20th anniversary of Vermont's EMS Conference. This years conference theme was “Extraordinary People - Extraordinary Service.” [ more ] Natalie Garza Still Waiting For Answers Concerning Her Missing Son By Dale Piper It has been just over two months since Nicholas Garza, a 19 year old first year student at Middlebury College, literally disappeared on a 500 yard walk between two college dorms. It has also been over two months since Natalie Garza, Nick's mother, has been home to Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is staying in Middlebury, at the college, awaiting word of her son's fate, but she has not been idle. Each day that a search has been mounted she has been out there searching along with them. She also walks the campus periodically, searching as she goes. [ more ] Counseling Service Breaks Ground for New Building Projects A groundbreaking was held this morning at Catamount Park in Middlebury to mark the beginning of construction on two major building projects for the Counseling Service of Addison County. The groundbreaking featured representatives from the agency's staff and its Board of Directors as well as Naylor and Breen Builders, contractor for the projects. Special guests included Governor Jim Douglas and John Goodrow representing Senator Patrick Leahy, who has secured a Federal earmark to assist the agency. [ more ]
