Sharing Memories of Vergennes with the Steven's House

   Now, before you get all excited and concerned that a building can not talk, this building begs to differ. Since 1796 when six men were licensed to keep “houses of public entertainment on the easterly corner of Main and Green Street,” thousands of people have crossed my path, stayed in my rooms, gazed at the streets of Vergennes from my windows, stabled their horses in my livery, and taken the stage, train or steamships after leaving my porch to destinations around the world. Presidents have eaten in my restaurants and notorious individuals from American history have made their last trip in caskets that have stopped and rested on my porch.    [ more ]

Around And About Addison County-Hancock

    Hancock is the most southeasterly town in Addison County.  It was Granted in 1780 and Chartered on July 31, 1781 by the State of Vermont to Samuel Wilcox and one hundred and twenty-nine associates. It originally contained 23,040 acres but in 1834 and again in 1847 small pieces were given to Rochester.   [ more ]

Electric Toy Car Raffle to Benefit the Vergennes Opera House

    The Vergennes Opera House will be holding a raffle for a brand new Fisher Price Power Wheels Monster Traction Jeep Hurricane generously donated by Lang McLaughry Spera, as part of the 2008 10th Annual Vermont Ladies Rally. This toy car can seat two children and has both a low and high speed operating mode. Modeled after Jeep's extreme off-road vehicle the Hurricane, the Power Wheel's version has many features similar to its full size namesake.  [ more ]

Addison County Local Vores Local Foods Harvest Festival

  To kick off the 2008 Eat Local Challenge, the Addison County Localvores present a Harvest Festival Saturday September 6, 2008, noon to 4 p.m. rain or shine on the Middlebury Town Green. The event is free and open to the public. Bring a dish to share prepared using local ingredients for the community potluck from noon to 1 if you can, or simply join in the bounty at the table. Enjoy music all afternoon by local musicians and sample fresh hand-cranked ice cream.
