‘08 Deer Season Prospects Good... Check-In Stations Ready
By Mike Cameron
The overall deer management programs currently being employed and enforced here in the state of Vermont appear to be paying dividends.    Fall archery hunters have reported seeing more and larger deer.  One long time archer who hunts near Middlebury reported seeing three bucks near his tree stand before he shot a fourth buck a few days later.   Another long time deer hunter from Rutland County said that so far his fall scouting has produced some “excellent results,” meaning that conditions in his area are ripe for a good fall fire arms hunt, including the sighting of several legal bucks in his area.  He reported that browse and mast crops were in good supply in his area.

Sharing Memories with Dr. Bob Fuller
By Bobby Worley
In your own neighborhood are stories waiting to be heard and told. If only we could make the time to sit down and get to know those in our towns, we would learn so much about our country and document incredible moments in the lives of so many who served our nation during times of conflict. I was first introduced to Dr. Fuller through my father and learned that both men were Masons. He completed his grade school years there in a two-room schoolhouse. Due to the fact that his family moved around a great deal, following his father’s jobs, he spent a good amount of time on his grandfather’s farm.  [ more ]

Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefit Today’s Youth
By Jacob Step
There is an ancient tree in my front yard.  Its evergreen boughs reach skyward and its trunk bears the scars of conflicts with wind, rain, snow and occasionally one of my siblings learning to drive.  In spring and summer it provides shade and beauty.  In the cold of our winters it blocks the wind and re-shapes the drifts of snow that seek to bury our porch and doorway.  As a child I climbed it and rested in its branches.  It stands silently season after season and watches the changes in the land, the town and in each member of my family as we age and grow.  It asks for nothing, but is always present, always on guard.  It keeps us safe and brings to light memories of summers past and family time spent in its shade.
