A Community Said Good-bye By Cookie Steponaitis Communities are defined by geography, professions, religions and even volunteerism. On January 5th, the communities of three states and fifteen fire and rescue departments came together to say farewell to one of their own. Chief Ralph Jackman was laid to rest amongst four generations of firefighters and symbolism that was not lost on the crowd of hundreds that watched in awe, reverence and remembrance. The Chief’s body was carried aboard one of VFD’s newest trucks on a journey from the Fire House to the church and finally the cemetery in Bristol. Steve Miller, owner of Auto Creek / A.C. Sports in Ferrisburgh and Vergennes, stopped by the Club one day in November to make a unique and generous offer. His donation of a new Yamaha Wolverine ATV to be raffled off to benefit the Club came as a great surprise to the staff and board and was very much appreciated. [ more ] 11th Annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” Tournament to Be Held in Middlebury January 23rd and 24th The Middlebury Otters and the Middlebury Mystix, two women’s community ice hockey teams, proudly host the 11th annual “Face Off Against Breast Cancer” hockey tournament on Saturday and Sunday, January 23 and 24, 2010, at the Howard Brush Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury. Bigger and better than ever, the tournament has expanded to a two-day format with three women’s divisions (competitive, recreational, and novice) and well as a “Friends and Family” division. Overall, the event includes twelve women’s hockey teams from all over Vermont, competing in games throughout both days, with ongoing hospitality and refreshments in the Warming Hut. Visiting teams include: Burlington Ice Breakers, Green Mountain Thunder, Vixen, Tsunamis, Waterbury Wicked, Manchester Rusty Blades, Rutland Cutting Edge, and Barre 32 Degrees. [ more ]
