A Life of Canning and Cranes: Sharing Memories with Harriet Stagg Griffith
By Cookie Steponaitis
Like many of her generation, Harriet Griffith isn’t sure that she has any stories that people would want to hear. “I am not sure what you will get out of this,” Harriet remarked at the beginning of the interview. “ I simply was just living my life and if there was work to be done I did it.” Describing herself as a woman of direct honesty and integrity, Harriet quickly shared her passion for colors, fashion, dancing and her family. Recollecting sitting in the family barn in Addison and playing on the horseless carriage, Harriet would dream of the places she would go. As the time progressed stories began to come to the surface that stopped this reporter in her tracks and echoed of phrases including, “Bulldozers, and moving Christmas trees to the White House, transporting the Apollo 11 capsule, and operating a crane business until she was 71.” By this point it was clear that like many of her generation, simply living her life met defying the odds, breaking molds and pushing past barriers that simply stood in her way.

Tigers Have Big Win in First Playoff Game
By Marcie Bolton
The Middlebury Tigers handily defeated the Rutland Red Raiders in the first post-season game 42-14, Friday night October 26.  Their third win in a row Middlebury’s momentum was in full gear with a total of over 530 yards throughout the night.  Of those 530, Nick Felkl owned 208 yards with 23 carries. Middlebury drew first blood as their QB Tyler Provencher scored a 74 yard touchdown with 7:06 left on the clock in the first quarter.  The point after was good.  The Tigers continued clawing for another score and were rewarded in the second quarter, when Nick Felkl rushed 20 yards through bringing the score to 14-0.  Late in the second quarter, deep in Tiger territory on a Middlebury fumble, Rutland took advantage and got on the board.  Raider senior Joe Sullivan pierced through the line to score a one yard touchdown.  Responding, Tiger Mitchell Clarke scored as he flew into the end zone and brought the score to 21-7.  With 42.3 seconds left in the second quarter Rutland’s Nick Boles answered with a 42 yard touchdown throw to Rocco Stoutes, the PAT good to end the half 21-14.   [ more ]

Heart Beat
By Tom Pinsonneault
Huey Lewis and the News will be quick to tell you where the heartbeat of Rock and Roll is located.  A doctor can tell you where the heartbeat of his patients is found. I maintain that the heartbeat of the community is in its organizations: the Masons, the Fortnightly, Knights of Columbus, Fire Departments and Rescue Squads, Boy Scouts and other volunteer organizations who work on behalf of the community and those who live in our towns, villages and cities.
