Senior Housing Project Honors Betty Bristol and Martin Casey By Cookie Steponaitis The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes was looking in 2000 for a new site and approached the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging (CVVA) and Vergennes Area Senior Association to see if there was any interest in creating a new shared space in town. A committee was formed to explore the idea under the group PACT and a planning grant was awarded to them to access the need and feasibility of senior housing or a shared space in the area. While time constraints and the finding of a permanent space resulted in the Boys and Girls Club leaving the process, new partnerships developed and an original plan to create twenty five units of Senior Housing was organized. [ more ] Vergennes Lions Club Celebrates a Successful Year and Inducts a New Slate of Officers While the conversation and light hearted banter included such phrases as Lion Tamers, Tail Twisters and 100% Secretary Awards, it truly was all about the business of community service when the Vergennes Lions got together to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of the next year of service. [ more ] Rain Garden Is More Than a Labor of Love What was once a barren wash on the grounds of the Marble Works Complex was transformed by caring volunteers and members of the River Front Committee into a Rain Garden in one day. Amidst the sunshine, planting and camaraderie of those assembled; there was a distinct purpose and plan. While adding Butterfly Weed, Fox Sedge, Dogwod, Irises, Spotted Joe Pye Weed, Coneflower, Cardinal Flower, Switch Grass, Little Bluestem and even some Red Twig Dogwood, the Rain garden is actually more than just a compilation of water loving plants. Volunteer Ethan Swift from the Agency of Natural Resources explained, “ this is a low tech way of addressing storm water run off,” and is part of the River Front Development plan.
