Grice Family Continues To Challenge VELCO's Power Lines By Dale Piper The dispute goes on regarding VELCO's Northwest Reliability Project, involving the installation of 345 kv transmission lines, virtually the length of Addison County. Foremost in the dispute is Middlebury's Harley Grice, retired farmer and owner of land in Middlebury and New Haven, along with his three daughters, Wendy Butler, Penny Curler and Heather Grice. The Grice farm has been in the family for generations and would be impacted in a major way if the power lines are permitted to go through as planned. [ more ] Sen. Giard Wants End To System Of Farmers Paying Transport Both Ways By Ed Barna They say you have to be an optimist to be a farmer, and even though Sen. Harold Giard is no longer an active dairyman, he’s optimistic about the industry’s future. Though he realizes conventional dairy farmers face a tough year due to anticipated drops in milk prices, he sees organic dairy farmers getting twice as much per hundredweight of milk. Not only that, he said in a recent interview, studies have shown the existing farms can’t keep up with the growing milk market. [ more ] Porter Hospital “North Project” Work In Progress By Mike Cameron Construction crews are continuing their work on Porter Hospital's “North Project”. The project includes reconstruction and modernization of the Department of Surgery, The creation of the community's first Birthing Center and the project carries with it the over all goal of renovating and improving every major patient care area of Porter Medical Center that began with a series of projects in 1992 with the opening of Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. “The $16 million project will involve the construction or renovation of more than 30,000 square feet of building and will position Porter Hospital to provide the state-of-the-art facilities, technology and services that our community needs, expects and deserves,” according to Porter Medical Center's President James L.
