Service In And Out Of Uniform When Those Who Serve Continue To Lead By Cookie Steponaitis On a steamy morning in May, 1862 a young Union soldier penned a letter home to his loved ones before the coming battle that would be taking place. History would record the day as the Battle of Winchester and give the victory to the southern forces under the leadership of Stonewall Jackson. The soldier’s letter would be his parting words to his loved ones and hidden behind the hope was a fear that the day dawning might be his last. “I am watching the rising of a sun that will hold much meaning to us all today. My thoughts are not with the men or the camp, but to the table you must now be at with my sisters. In my mindeye you are so real and the love so strong. If I do perchance make it home, we will have so much to do together, for there are still so many needs to be met and things to accomplish.” [ more ] Tigers Push Hartford To Limit In 26-9 Semi Loss By Mike Cameron The Tigers improved all year and now they were in the final 4. There were some who said no way... too many mistakes, too many turnovers. This team came up with big plays late in the season and cut down on the miscues. Now they were off to Hartford to play the number one Division 1 team in the state. Except for a loss to a large down state school early in the season and a funky first half at Rutland when they trailed by 20, the Hurricanes are the real deal and they are very difficult to beat at home. Hartford came in at 8-1. They were the number one seed. [ more ] Local Teacher Honored As Vermont Physical Education Teacher Of The Year By Cookie Steponaitis Ed Cook was in the midst of his senior year at Milton High School when he knew he wanted to teach Physical Education and coach. “I had great coaches and PE teachers coming up through school and wanted to have that same kind of impact that my teachers had on me,” remarked Cook. Cook has always been an athlete and loved how physical education encouraged people to take care of their bodies, participate as a team, how to win and lose and problem solve. [ more ]
