O’Daniel walked into the band room of Vergennes Union High School and surveyed her band of fifteen students. Pint sized and full of passion for music, she began the first day to set the tone for the music program that has developed into one of the strongest in the state. Now in her 39th year at the helm of the Commodore program, O’Daniel is being honored for her commitment to her students, her passion for music and unique talent for bringing people into the program who never saw themselves as musicians. Decked and dazzling the trees are showcasing crops of over 120 different types of apples. While it is enough to make some people break into a happy dance, it is more than just a family tradition. It represents an age-old industry, that like Vermont agriculture itself, has grown and evolved to stay competitive and yet true to the Vermont ethos of fresh products with a quality taste and reputation.
