 It was 1979 when Susan P. O’Daniel walked into the band room of Vergennes Union High School and surveyed her band of fifteen students. Pint sized and full of passion for music, she began the first day to set the tone for the music program that has developed into one of the strongest in the state. Now in her 39th year at the helm of the Commodore program, O’Daniel is being honored for her commitment to her students, her passion for music and unique talent for bringing people into the program who never saw themselves as musicians.  Tigers went four and out on their first possession. Rutland got their first score after a Tiger fumble recovery and Rutland drive from mid-field. Raider quarterback Jared Miglorie led his team to the Tiger 10 and then slashed off tackle for the score with 4:33 left in the first quarter. In a omen of things to come later in the game, Noah Crossman's point after kick was blocked by Middlebury's big Jack Deppman. The Raiders were up 6-0 but not for long.

 Truth be told, most of us have looked up at the sky and envied the freedom with which the birds can soar and wonder at the views they contemplate. For most of this century the only way to photograph the world from the heights of the flying birds of prey was in an airplane, in a balloon or from an orbiting satellite.  While Mother Nature is sending rather strong mixed messages as to what season it currently is, the orchards of the Champlain Valley have no such issue. Decked and dazzling the trees are showcasing crops of over 120 different types of apples. While it is enough to make some people break into a happy dance, it is more than just a family tradition. It represents an age-old industry, that like Vermont agriculture itself, has grown and evolved to stay competitive and yet true to the Vermont ethos of fresh products with a quality taste and reputation. So off we go to the orchards of the Champlain Valley in search of the perfect apple. [ more ]
