Local Chapter Of The DAR Programs Support Veterans & Children By Cookie Steponaitis Founded in 1890 in Washington, D.C., the Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization that is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Known best to most Vermonters for their work with the John Strong Mansion Museum in Addison, Vermont, the DAR volunteers are in more places and in more programs, that most even realize. The local Seth Warner- Rhoda Farrand chapter is comprised of approximately 38 members that serves veterans, children, and the elderly. The chapter is openly looking to share their programs, ideas and mission with local people who might like to help. [ more ] Sharing Memories With Steve And Kathy Brooks By Cookie Steponaitis Steve Brooks was born and raised in Addison County and grew up with his siblings at the family home on Basin Harbor Road. After graduating from VUHS in 1968, Brooks enlisted in the United States Navy following a family tradition that included a lot of uncles in military service. After attending basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station in Michigan and Radar School, Brooks boarded his assigned ship, the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in Norfolk, Virginia. [ more ] Vermonters Have Different Options Of How To Vote By Cookie Steponaitis With Town Meeting Day rapidly approaching many people pause to reflect on the issues up for their consideration as tax payers and citizens. School budget, tax rates, changes in zoning, designation of repairs to roads and much more are upcoming topics of debate and to be put to the vote. While some will head to town meeting and vote at the polls, many Vermonters find it difficult to get in to vote and often leave the decisions to the voices of those present.
