Connor Sisters Take Top Honors in Miss Vermont National Teenager Scholarship Competition By Cookie Steponaitis Sunday, April 9th saw a packed house at Rutland's Paramount Theater. The crowd was cheering for a talented group of young women who were competing for the titles of Miss Vermont National Teenager, Miss Vermont Junior National Teenager, and Miss Vermont Sweetheart. At stake were scholarships and prizes totaling over $ 160,000. As the crowd supported them, each contestant appeared in talent, speech, on stage question and in evening gown. Earlier that weekend, they had also had interviews with a distinguished panel of judges and a scoring of their resumes including academics, community service and extracurricular activities. Rounding out the talented field was outgoing 2005 titleholders Alexandra Larrow and Celie Degesse. [ more ] Gov. Douglas Signs Bill S.251 By Cheryl White Friday, April 14, 2006 Governor Jim Douglas signed into law bill S.251. This law removes the burden of proof from the firefighters family to the insurance company. Several fire departments throughout the state were on hand to witness the signing. The new law presumes that a heart attack suffered by a firefighter or emergency medical personnel within 72 hours of response to an emergency situation would mean that workers compensation would cover costs of treatment, and in the event of death, would make payments to the surviving family. President of Addison County Firefighters Assoc. Dean Gilmore explained to The Voice “We are looking out for the firefighters and their family in the event of tragedy.” [ more ] Middlebury Pediatric Practice Settles Into New Digs By Dale Piper On Monday, April 10, Addison County's oldest pediatric practice moved from its makeshift home in the modular units behind Helen Porter Nursing Home to spacious, airy accommodations in the new medical office building at 1330 Exchange Street in Middlebury. Begun in the 1960s as the sole practice of the late Dr. Wayne Peters, known affectionately in the area as Dr. Pete, Middlebury Pediatric and adolescent Medicine has grown and evolved into a sizeable, thriving group of six physicians. [ more ] VUHS Students Shine At State History Competition Saturday, April 8th saw the gathering of the largest amount of students from across the state in the history of the Vermont History Day Competition. Over 230 students came together to demonstrate their research, findings, and conclusions in their own personal projects. Categories at the competition included thesis papers, performance, documentary, and exhibits. Within these choices were further categories based on single or group entries and junior and senior divisions. [ more ]
