Tiger Football 2 For 2 Take Otters Then Hurricanes By Mike Cameron The 2007 Schoolboy Football Season got off to a roaring start on Friday night August 31st with a number of marquis match-ups across the state. Hartford and Rutland both looked impressive in their opening wins with the Hartford Hurricanes flooding BFA of Saint Albans 33-8 and Rutland catching a strong South Burlington team 19-14 in a come-from-behind effort. In other D-1 action Mt. Anthony edged Fair Haven 29-20 in a non-league encounter. [ more ] A Day In The Life Of Police Officer Austin By Dale Piper Recently, I had the opportunity to ride along with Middlebury Police Department's Officer Bill Austin. It was a drismal (drippy, dismal?) day that developed into full-blown rain, but that didn't detract from the experience. Apparently bad weather keeps somewhat of a lid on criminal activity, but it was still extremely interesting and I learned a great deal. [ more ] From Where I Lie: Boredom Is a Boy With a Hoe By Larry Johnson My father once wrote a poem entitled “A Boy With a Hoe.” Although I don’t remember the words, I vividly recall the general philosophy of the piece. It was about boredom and its various manifestations. And I have to agree with Dear Old Dad that there is hardly anything more pathetic than a young boy hoeing a potato patch; unless, perhaps, it’s a teenage boy forced to associate with adults at some compulsory function, such as a reunion or a company picnic. The pain can be significantly reduced, however, if there happens to be a cute teenage girl somewhere in close proximity (a potato patch rarely produces this pleasant phenomenon). [ more ]
