Sharing Memories With Mary Volkert

   Mary Volkert was born 90 years ago on October 19, 1917, in Appleton, Wisconsin. The event was doubly distinguished by the fact that it was the 7th anniversary of her sister Eleanor's birthday. According to Mary, Eleanor was unimpressed, and her own celebration unaffected, by the arrival of a baby sister.
     Appleton was a small Midwestern college town when Mary was growing up and it provided a secure and friendly atmosphere. Her father and his brother owned and operated a meat market and grocery store, and, Mary remembers, that the family managed to have good food and to eat well even during The Great Depression.

Tigers Sink Seahorses at Burlington 35-13

    Coach Pete Brakeley’s high flying Middlebury Union high School Tigers were in Burlington on Friday night  October 12th for a tee-up with the Burlington High Sea Horses at the sparkling new Buck Hard Field off North Avenue.
    Middlebury had earned an impressive 6-0 record coming into this one and the Horses were 2-4 overall with many of the Queen City sports scribes saying that the men in blue were a much better team than their record indicated.

Firehouse Dedication Honors Fallen Chief

   On Sunday afternoon October 13th family, friends and fellow fighter fighters attended an open house and dedication ceremony at the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department Building in the village.  They were there to remember the late Whiting Fire Chief Clarence Birchmore.  The station will now bear his name.
   Birchmore, a 35-year veteran of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department died on Saturday, March 16th, 2002 as he was responding to a fire call when he suffered a heart attack.  His wife Charlotte (pictured) along with her sons Chris and Kevin and daughter Angela thanked those who attended the ceremony.
